Junior Delaney Kohorst in a League of her Own

2016 Jan 7

Time management can be one of the toughest things to master as a college student, but that is not the case for Delaney Kohorst, a junior from Cohasset, MN, who is double majoring in business management and marketing with a minor in humanities. Kohorst takes her involvement on campus to a whole new level. She is the vice president of the Crookston Student Association, a member of the business club known as Enactus, and serves on both the Homecoming Committee and Crookston Campus-Community Council (C4).

Kohorst is also a community advisor where she holds the responsibility of making sure dormitory hall residents have a safe and healthy environment to live and study in. "If there are any issues among the residents, that's where I come in," she says.

She claims she learned her time management skills from being a former member of the U of M Crookston Women's Soccer team. "What student athletes do is crazy. I don't think people realize how time consuming it is to be a college athlete," Kohorst states. "They have practices and meetings on top of their academic coursework, and I give them nothing but props."

Kohorst played soccer for the Golden Eagles until the middle of her sophomore season when she unfortunately had to give up the sport she loved due to injuries. Kohorst claims it is something she will always miss, "I've been playing since I was four. I made some unforgettable memories on the soccer field and I wouldn't trade it for anything."

The busy student effortlessly radiates her warm and outgoing personality, which is a treat to anyone who crosses her path. So, it comes as no surprise that she was offered an internship position with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks a couple days after being interviewed on the spot at a job fair going on at the University of Minnesota Crookston in January.

Kohorst spent the summer of 2015 in Fargo doing ticket sales and marketing for the RedHawks professional baseball team. "My supervisors allowed me to work on many different events so I could experience as much as possible," Kohorst says. "The staff was super supportive and the other interns were so much fun to work with." She also spent sometime during the games with the promotions crew where she would help start cheers, run the bases, and dance in front of a few thousand people.

It was a very positive experience for her, but she learned that ticket sales do not hold her interest in terms of a future career. She encourages other students be open-minded with whatever internship you decide to try and to make the most of it.

Kohorst chose the Crookston campus because of the small class sizes, and she liked the distance it was from her home in Cohasset. Her favorite thing about the U of M Crookston is the people. "I love all of the faculty and staff I have had to the opportunity to work with thus far, and of course, the other students I have met have been awesome!"
