Jacob Butcher was recognized during annual student awards celebration in April at the U of M Crookston.

The University of Minnesota Crookston recognized students outstanding in the field of golf and turf management in the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department. The outstanding turfgrass student was named along with recognition of the U of M Crookston Turf Bowl Team.

The Outstanding Turfgrass Student Award was presented to David Zapata, a senior majoring in golf and turf management from Harvard, Ill. He was also a member of the turfbowl team, which included golf and turf management majors Cody Pamperin, a senior from Shakopee, Minn.; Ben Koisti, a junior from Lake Norden, South Dakota; and Jake Butcher, a senior from Palmer, Alaska.

In early February, the Golf Course Superintendents of America sponsored their annual turf bowl competition at the Golf Industry Show. Fifty-eight teams, composed of 204 students from 36 different schools competed in the event February 9 in Orlando, Florida.

The 3 ? hour turf bowl exam is comprised of nine sections including identification (turfgrass, seed, soil, weed, insect, and disease), turfgrass growth and development, soil and soil fertility, weed management, disease management, insect management, turfgrass calculations, business management, and a case study essay.
