As part of New Student Orientation at the University of Minnesota Crookston, students are introduced to Crookston through a program called "Meet Crookston through Service" before classes even start.

On Saturday, August 22, 2015, students were at work at 14 different locations around the community under the direction of their student orientation leader and Lisa Loegering, assistant director of community engagement on the Crookston campus.

Caleb Rempel, Mountain Lake, Minn. , (56159) spent the morning at Washington Elementary School volunteering as part of this unique service opportunity.

Sites and their respective service activities included:

Oakdale Cemetery - Worked with members of the Knights of Columbus to put pea gravel underneath the headstones that have sunken at Oakdale Cemetery.

Castle Park - Worked with community members to pull weeds and prepare this natural play space for an upcoming children's event.

Cathedral School/Cathedral Library - Cleaned areas of the school and organized books in the library

Care and Share - Painted several rooms, put together "Beds in a Bag," and organized a room full of donations.

Crookston Downtown Beautification - Weeded and watered numerous gardens in Crookston

Humane Society - Bathed animals and walked dogs

Minnesota Institute of Contemplation and Healing (MICAH) - Made signs for a pilgrimage trail located at the site.

North Country Food Bank (Downtown location) - Packed food boxes

Polk County Historical Museum - Moved and set up books for upcoming book sale

Red River Valley Sugarbeet Museum - Cleaned up in preparation for their upcoming Harvest Festival.

Rydell National Wildlife Refuge - Removed protective tubes from trees and calculated tree survival rates

Sun, Country, and You - Pulled weeds, cleaned, and prepared for upcoming event.

Villa St. Vincent - Visited with residents

Washington Elementary School - helped teachers prepare their classrooms for the start of school.
